MAP Testing Is Over.....It's time to CELEBRATE!

Hello Friends!
It's been a beautiful week! We spent lots of extra time playing outside this week since we were testing. Next week will be filled with lots of fun as well!

HOMEWORK INFO:
***We are ramping up our study of Multiplication facts in order to prepare for math next year! :)

1. Each night your child is required to practice facts either using paper and pencil or by visiting the websites or apps listed on the HW page that was sent home last week.
2. Please sign their HW sheet after they practice.
3. We will take a weekly quiz and graph the results as well as set goals for the following week.

ITEMS FOR NEXT WEEK:

1. Please consider sending in donations for our service project. We are planning to visit Sunrise Senior Living on Wednesday! We will need to prepare the bags on Monday and Tuesday.

2. We will be having a READ IN next Friday the 18th. The children can wear PJ's and bring in their sleeping bags, pillows or stuffed animals if they like. The students will have a book exchange with the whole 3rd grade! Please allow your child to choose a gently used book from home to share with a classmate. Just wrap it up and send it in!

Look for photos next week! :)

Dear Parents,
This year the Third Grade would like to give back to our wonderful community. We have been discussing that giving is a true a gift and we would like to share this experience together. We will be walking to  Sunrise Senior Living on Clairemont on December 16th to give the residents a little gift.
We are asking for donations to make toiletry packages for the seniors. Please consider sending in a bag of one of the items listed below. You can take your child to the dollar store and spend $10-$15, maybe even convince your child to spend his or her own money!! Just send them in with your child and we will create the bags.
Thank-You,
 The 3rd Grade Team

Here is what we've been up to:

Finding Area
Students used 8.5 X11 paper and index cards to try to determine the area of their table. The catch is that they didn't have a formula or enough of either tool so they had to try and figure it out!

The next day students were given rectangles and graph paper and they were asked to find area again.

GEOBOARDS: Students needed to create shapes with an area that I dictated. Many students figured out that they could make irregular shapes or use halves to create an area.

In reading we are learning about the structure of Non-Fiction text. Students worked in groups to determine what structure a set of paragraphs fit into.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

Thank you so much for your help!!

This week we helped our Book Buddies publish a page for their case study project. Your child taught his/her buddy how to use Sketchpad.

We learned how to compare rectangles in order to determine AREA (we have not used a formula...that will happen after the break)

We have researched and chosen our Non-Fiction topics and we have been examining the features and structures of Non-fiction reading and writing.

Gratitude

Hello Friends,
I have lots to share with you this week. Thank you so much for coming to our Writing Celebration! The children really enjoyed showing off all of their hard work! I am so proud of the transformations they made as writers.

Housekeeping:
***Wednesday is our Thanksgiving Luncheon. Thank you for sending in your RSVP. If you are unable to make it the lunch, I will be there to eat with your child so don't worry!****

A Day in the Life of Your Child:
We've been working very diligently to connect our learning to our upcoming Case Study theme: Agents of Change.

In Social Studies, we have almost completed our work on three (there are nine total) of our historical figures. We have learned about women's suffrage through the Bio of Susan B. Anthony, America's Independence through the Bio of Paul Revere, and Freedom through the Bio of Frederick Douglass. We have discussed how these 3 great figures showed courage and diligence to overcome obstacles & social barriers.

In Reading & Writing, we have begun our work on Non-fiction text. In this unit, we will learn about NF text features like maps, diagrams, captions, italics, boldface, and text boxes. We will also learn about the structures of NF text such as compare/contrast, question/answer, problem/solution and chronological order.

In Math, we are working on using strategies to solve 1 and 2-step word problems. We are using the CUBES method.

In Science, we finished learning about the adaptations of plants. Mrs. Ericson (Finn's mom) came to show us carnivorous plants and the children were able to dissect a pitcher plant to see all the insects inside.
